Essay: Brown was Helpless in the Forest

“My faith is gone”, this was Brown’s cry when he was desperate and helpless in the forest. He is at one point referring to the faith in God since he gave up and allowed the devil o take control. ”There is no good on earth; and sin is but a name. Come, devil! for to thee is this world given”, (pg 189).

However, the quote has a deeper meaning as well in the sense that, faith refers to his wife, while in the forest, Brown is said to have seen his wife among the group that was going for the witches Sabbath. As such from that perspective, the man is crying because of losing his wife to the evil world.
