Essay: Superiority of Groups

Essay: Superiority of Groups

In order for the in-group to have a sense of the position of their group in the social order, they have to believe that their group is superior as compared to the other groups. Additionally, members of the in-group must see those who are not part of them as different, thus leading to a situation where they make conclusions and generalizations over what they imagine to be true about the particular out-group.

Moreover, the in-group has to feel that they are entitled to some rights and resources, which they believe the out-group has no access. On the other hand, though, the out-group must be in such a position that they want the very same privileges and resources that the in-group has, and in greater quantities. This makes the in-group feel threatened.
