The most commonly renowned representation of Jerusalem is not a Jewish or Christian holy place but a Muslim one known as the Dome of the Rock. The Dome of the Rock stands with its golden dome rising above the open area of al-Masjid al-Aqsa. The Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, to be found in the holy city, unquestionably one of the most distinguished and most extraordinary monuments of early Islam, which is visited every year by thousands of pilgrims and sightseers. Constructed on top of what was the previous location of the Temple, the Dome of the Rock was raised by the Muslim leader Abdul Malik in 688-691 A lead dome covered this shrine from 691 till the time that it was later replaced with a gold-colored covering in 1965. Because of corrosion, the anodized aluminum cover was replaced once again in the year1993 with a gold covering.
The astonishing visual impact of the Dome of the Rock is to some extent due to the mathematical rhythm of its proportions. All the vital dimensions are connected to the center circle that environs the sacred stone. For instance, each external wall is sixty seven feet long, which is precisely the dome’s diameter and accurately its height from the base of the drum.
As mentioned previously, in 688AD the Umayyad Khalif, ‘Abdul Malik ibn Marwan, instigated work on the Dome of the Rock. The Dome of the Rock has remained untouched for more than thirteen centuries and is perhaps one of the world’s most attractive and lasting architectural treasures. The gold dome extends up to around 20 meters across the Noble Rock, going up to an apex that is nearly more than 35 metres above it. Across the top, the Qur’anic verse ‘Ya Sin’ is emblazoned in the astounding tile work specially made in the 16th century by Suleiman the Magnificent.
