Introduction
Jerusalem, which has also come to be known as Al-Quds, The Holy is perhaps the religious center of a number of religions. In Jerusalem, perhaps the most famous Islamic site is the Dome of the Rock, which is known amongst the Muslims as Qubbat as-Sakhrah. An inspiring and fine-looking structure, the Dome of the Rock can be seen from all over Jerusalem, and is basically the crowning glory of the Haram es-Sharif of the Muslims, which is known as the “Noble Sanctuary”, or Temple Mount.
The Dome of the Rock cannot be considered as a mosque as it is a Muslim shrine. Like the Ka’bah in Mecca, it is constructed over a sanctified stone. It is believed by the Muslims that this stone is the place from which the Prophet Muhammad rose up into heaven during his journey to heaven in the night. The Dome of the Rock is at times considered by the Muslims as the oldest Islamic shrine that stands today and definitely one of the most striking. Nevertheless, along with the modern day development the golden dome of the Dome of the Rock rises above the expansion as a token of the faiths that are bound to the land.
