Jean- Paul Sartre (1905 – 1980) a famous French existentialist wrote “The Flies” an adaptation of Greek Myth ‘Electra’. The story is based on the myth of two children avenging the death of their father, King Agamemnon, by killing his murderers, their mother and stepfather. Sartre has used existentialism in this book of his by making his character fight the Gods and defeating them that leads to a handful of their supporters who are fearful and shameful of their humanity. Sartre wanted to portray in this play that even slaves should have a freedom of mind that will never enslave them to anybody.

Frantz Fanon (1925 – 1961) wrote the book “Black Skin, White Masks” in 1952, based on the lives and difficulties of black people and the superiority complex of whites. The book is a “hybrid of psychological analysis, conditional study, political manifesto, an exploration sexual identity and identities – and hovering at the center of this is Fanon’s own examination of himself.” (Schneider). In this book, Fanon tries to understand and challenge the behavior of black people who are educated and still follow the behavior of their white colonizers, insisting on freedom, a major tenet of Existentialism.

Albert Camus, the famous French existentialist author wrote the book “The Guest” in 1957. The book is based on the events preceding the Algerian uprising between a French schoolteacher and an Arab prisoner. The author has tried to portray the characteristics of both the colonizer and the colonized; and in portraying their relationship emphasizing on freedom and difficulty in making moral decisions.
