In love and vertigo, by Teo an example of a family that is in an identity crisis is evident. The main character in the book is Grace Tay. She is of an Australian origin and faces an identity crisis when she flies to Singapore, to be re-united with her family.
She reckons, “this is not the Singapore my mother told me about. Her stories are a world apart from this: no longer reality but history. Just like my mother herself” (Teo 27). Born as an Australian, Grace cannot come to terms that her mother is no longer Australian by the mere fact she has been leaving elsewhere with a Chinese family. It seems that Grace has been isolated from her family for a long time, and this intrigues her to find her family roots in Singapore as well as the cause of her mother’s death.
