Commonly used JEV vaccines are mouse brain, cell culture derived live attenuated and inactivated. Safe and effective vaccines in use in the last three decades are formalin inactivated. The only World Health Organization (WHO) approved JEV vaccines is the mouse brain inactivated processed by Beijing_1 and Nakayama strains. Other vaccines in use are protein based, recombinant virus and DNA vaccines.
Protein vaccines produce protective immunity through receptor binding of the virus. Currently DNA vaccines are recommended for their ability to develop a wide range of immune responses like antibodes, CD8 cyctotoxic lymphocytes and CD4 helper.
