(1) Brief overview of Burj Khalifa
The concept of building skyscrapers has been introduced in advanced countries from years and due to which certain tall buildings had come into existence and have become tourist attraction from all over the world. Skyscrapers like Sear Tower; Petronas Twin Towers, Toronto City Tower, & World Trade Centre have been the most famous structures that come under the category of tallest structures that exist in recent times. Burj Khalifa has recently become the world tallest structure which was under construction for six straight years and finally got inaugurated on 4th January 2010 (Adrian, 2010).
The construction of this 828 m tall, reinforced concrete tower structure, broke several records during its construction. As it is the first time a tower of this height is attempted, a combination of several important technological concepts and innovative structural design methods were utilized in its construction (Carson, 2009).
The architectural and structural design for the Burj Khalifa was performed by Adrian Smith and his team of ninety designers at the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM). SOM also designed the Willis Tower (formerly known as Sears Tower) in Chicago, Illinois and 1 World Trade Center in New York City. The Burj Khalifa resembles the bundled tube form of the
Willis Tower, but is not a tube structure (Carson, 2009).
Burj Khalifa is located in the downtown of Dubai on the first interchange of Dubai’s famous Shaikh Zayed Road. The world tallest building has a famous Armani Hotel inside that offers suites and other exciting packages to the visitors. Offices and residential units too are available in Burj Khalifa.
