Employer has a right to hire healthy workers so that he may have a productive workforce (Tech et al., 2002, 1). However, now days many patients are worried that genetic testing can result in discrimination. Basically, Genetic discrimination is when a person is treated unfairly because of differences in his/her DNA that increases the chance of getting a certain illness. Patients are concerned about their genetic information of having an effect on their health insurance or their employment. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) provide a feature which keeps people’s genetic information confidential where as it also forbids the elimination of an individual from group coverage due to genetic tendency.

Conclusion

I am not in the favor of genetic testing as I consider this as a serious violation of the privacy rights of an individual. Only I have the right to contact any doctor of my choice and perform genetic testing for my benefit only. No employer can invade my privacy rights for forcing me to have a genetic test so that the employer may save his healthcare expenditure.
