Extensive and comprehensive research have been conducted by many on the aspect of media violence, its effects on children and the aggressive behaviour that it encourages in the new generation. A study was conducted by Brady and Mathews to determine the impact of media violence on the health of the audience.
The research was a scientific research undertaken through an experimental laboratory study approach. The setting of the research was in a university campus setting with an urban environment. The respondents of the study were mainly male university students’ aged between 18 to 21 years of age. The results of the study depicted that “Men randomly assigned to play Grand Theft Auto III exhibited greater increases in diastolic blood pressure from a baseline rest period to game play, greater negative affect, more permissive attitudes toward using alcohol and marijuana, and more uncooperative behaviour in comparison with men randomly assigned to play The Simpsons. Only among participants with greater exposure to home and community violence, play of Grand Theft Auto III led to elevated systolic blood pressure in comparison with play of The Simpsons” (Brady & Mathews, 2006)
