One evening, Gates was walking home with his father who had just finished his moonlighting job at a telephone company where he worked as a janitor. They stopped at the Cut-Rate Drug Store where his father bought him two scoops of caramel ice cream in a wafer cone. They were financially secure as they had enough to eat, good clothes to wear and commanded a mixture of respect and resentment from the white race.
Gates was busy licking his ice cream when an Irish man, Mr. Wilson, walked by carrying a black metallic lunch pail which was worn out. He was known to be very antisocial even with the white people but Mr. Wilson usually talked to Gates’ father. Upon their encounter, Gates’ father greeted Mr. Wilson who answered back, “hello George.”
