Sample Essay
The main theme of the novel under consideration is that of fear and survival. Fear of getting killed by the Nazis and an urge to survive under dire circumstances. Right from the beginning of the novel we find all the characters making attempts to save their lives. First of all, the author tells us of the parents and children escaping from the Nazis who are coming to capture them.
In order to help the children in living on their own in the forest, their parents even change their Jewish names to Hansel and Gretel. Their father survived through hard times by putting up and being friends with the over powering nation. The children are then forced to go into the forest without their parents so as to save their lives as their father says, “Someone could take pity on them. The girl is eleven, old enough to be useful. They may have luck” (Murphy, p. 3), where they start living with Magda. Hence throughout the novel, survival is a theme that is present in all the characters.
Conclusion
In the light of the above discussion we can hereby culminate that the character of Magda in The True Story of Hansel and Gretel changes over time and the theme of survival is prevalent in the novel.
